GET INVOLVED WITH WATER OVER NICKEL — BECOME A WATER AMBASSADOR - March 2025
By Kelly Applegate, Commissioner of Natural Resources
Water Over Nickel’s work helps raise awareness about the risks associated with the proposed Tamarack nickel mine. This year, we’re sharing the Band’s focus on the importance of protecting clean water with more Minnesotans, with state and federal leaders, with other tribes, and with Mille Lacs Band members. Our Water Ambassador program gives Band members the opportunity to get involved and directly contribute to our work to protect precious water resources.
What is the Water Ambassadors program?
Water Ambassadors are volunteers that play an important role in Water Over Nickel, helping us connect with Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe members, local organizations, and people living near the Tamarack mine.
What do Water Ambassadors do?
Water Ambassadors are part of the broader Water Over Nickel team and help by:
• Representing Water Over Nickel at events, like Treaty Rights Day and State of the Band.
• Sharing information about Water Over Nickel on social media.
• Educating younger Band members about the importance of protecting the earth for the next seven generations.
• Sharing updates and asking for feedback at Band district meetings and community gatherings.
• Connecting with groups who also support water protection, like the Tamarack Water Alliance.
Water Ambassadors will generally volunteer for an average of three hours a month. The Water Over Nickel team will provide Water Ambassador training, including all the resources you need to be successful.
